I love my work and what I do. I literally wake up in the morning and can hardly wait for the day to begin so I can do what I love to do. It’s easy to forget that there actually was a time when my “job” didn’t exist. (For those of you who don’t know what I do, visit www.yourhappinessu.com)
Why am I telling you this? Because I had a few people tell me how much they hate their job and how fortunate I am that I can do what I want. If you “hate” what you do, I want to remind you that you can be fortunate too! How? Make a decision to make it happen.
Before I got into how most people know me today, for years I worked as an on-camera TV host. My whole life was television, commercials and spokesperson work. However, one day I came to work and my boss told me that he sold the company and my newscast would be discontinued. The day he told me this, my television career ended and I went down to apply for unemployment.
When I was in line, I remembered an astrologer had told me that my cycle in television would end at exactly the time it did, and I would go on a different path.
What should I do?
At that time, I had no other specialized knowledge, and I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I did have an interest in astrology and decided to buy a few astrology books. I found astrology to be fun, helpful and interesting, and I made a commitment to learn it. I invented my job from there because I decided I wanted to be an astrologer. The key is that I decided I wanted to be an astrologer and I decided I was going to make it happen.
After astrology I added feng shui to my skill set, got ordained as a minister and became a wedding officiant, took “how to be a life coach” classes and basically “made up” my job along the way with all the things that I thought would be “fun to do.” From there I had the idea to create a school where I could teach people to be happy and they could learn things to help them excel in life. I retired from feng shui, weddings and some other things to do this.
The point is that it is never too late. MAKE A DECISION TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN FOR YOURSELF.
All Jobs are Invented
Think about it! All jobs are invented. Every job on this planet started from nothing. You may think that your survival is dependent on a job that someone else made up (that you hate) but realistically, who ever made up the job that you do basically did it so that they could offer a service and get paid for it. So what am I saying? If you LOVE doing something, find a way to get paid for it.
Invent a Job for Yourself
What do you love to do? You may think that what you love to do has no way to bring you income, however, if you love doing something, there will be people who will love to pay you for it. Martha Beck (PhD in sociology) says that the single most important skill you can have in the 21st century is not to do a job but to invent a job. She says that “The job you are meant to have has not yet been named.” How about that?
You are a unique individual with skills and talents. What is it you want to do for fun and get paid for? What if you got fired tomorrow? Would you look for another job? Or would you choose to be creative with your life so you can live with a greater purpose?
Who likes their job?
Isn’t it interesting that people are always looking for jobs that nobody really likes anyway? All human beings are creative individuals, born to problem solve, yet the majority are willing to submit themselves to working boring jobs they don’t love, thinking there are no other options.
Serve Yourself, Serve Others, Serve the world
You have it in you – somewhere deep inside of your heart – your purpose and your inspired mission. It is there waiting to emerge. Start thinking now about what you can do to make a change in your life if you hate what you are doing. Make a commitment. Start small on the side – do something. Just don’t wait. The time is now.
